Excursion Highlights
Oberstdorf and the surrounding Allgäu region present an abundance of remarkable destinations for every visitor. We have curated a selection of particularly rewarding locations that merit your attention during your stay.
The Breitachklamm: An Extraordinary Natural Experience
This exceptional natural monument in Oberstdorf ranks among Central Europe's deepest rock gorges. Recognized as one of the Allgäu's most celebrated attractions, it extends from Oberstdorf Tiefenbach through to the neighboring Kleinwalsertal valley. Access is available from either end of the route.
A visit proves worthwhile throughout the year, as the Breitachklamm presents an imposing spectacle in both summer and winter seasons. Experience the raw power of rushing water, listen to the river's thunderous echoes, observe the profound depths of the chasms, and marvel at the fascinating formations that water has carved into stone through its tremendous force over countless years.
A Year-Round Pleasure: Freibergsee
Situated at nine hundred and thirty-one meters above sea level with approximately eighteen hectares of water surface, Freibergsee stands as the largest high mountain lake in the Allgäu and Germany's southernmost natural swimming destination. The lake formed during the ice ages, when ice masses of the Stillach glacier towered seven to eight hundred meters above the present location.
The immense, constantly flowing ice masses carved the lake basin from the soft flysch rock. The last glaciers retreated from the Allgäu approximately ten thousand years ago.
In summer, visitors of all ages delight in water temperatures reaching up to twenty-five degrees Celsius. Winter transforms the area with splendid walking paths ideal for contemplative strolls.
Azure Jewel: The Christlessee
This cobalt-blue shimmering, crystal-clear, and mysteriously enchanting mountain lake represents a particular highlight of the Trettach valley and remarkably never freezes, even in winter. Strong springs emerge immediately south of the lake, feeding it with pristine water and delivering exceptional drinking water quality. Thanks to a constant water temperature of four degrees Celsius, the lake remains unfrozen through winter, though it proves far too cold for summer swimming.
From this location, one may embark on idyllic hiking expeditions further into the Spielmannsau, or through the Trettach or Oy valleys.
Ascending to New Heights: The Nebelhorn
No cable car in the Allgäu climbs higher than the route to the two thousand, two hundred and twenty-four meter Nebelhorn summit. The experience offers breathtaking vistas encompassing over four hundred Alpine peaks, along with panoramic views from the North Face Path. Spectacular vertical and distant perspectives are assured, with views plunging six hundred meters down along the Nebelhorn's northern wall.
Dining with superior prospects is guaranteed from the summit restaurant's two hundred and seventy-degree viewing angle. Nature trails and hiking paths welcome summer visitors, while winter brings enthusiastic crowds seeking alpine sport opportunities. Those who prefer simply to observe and appreciate find themselves equally well accommodated here.
